Puerta de la Ilustración, Madrid

Puerta de la Ilustración is a monumental urban sculpture in Madrid, located where Avenida de la Ilustración meets Glorieta de las Reales Academias in the Barrio del Pilar. Designed in 1984 by sculptor, painter, and draftsman Andreu Alfaro, it was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works and Urban Development during the construction of Avenida de la Ilustración. The avenue’s original urban plan included four large monuments, but only this gateway was completed. During installation, a 20-meter concrete beam used to support the sculpture sank 14 meters underground and struck Metro Line 9, which led to the suspension of the wider monumental project. The sculpture was inaugurated in 1990.
