Vodnik Monument

The Vodnik Monument stands at Vodnik Square in Ljubljana, Slovenia, near the Ljubljana Central Market. It honors Valentin Vodnik (1758–1819), a Carniolan priest, poet, and journalist who was a major figure in the Slovene National Awakening. The monument was proposed by politician Lovro Toman for the 100th anniversary of Vodnik’s birth and organized by the Writers’ Support Society with the Slovene Society. The bronze statue was cast in Vienna between 1887 and 1889 and unveiled on 30 June 1889 as the first public Slovene national monument. It stands on a simple stone pedestal with inscriptions and a later bronze decoration added by France in 1929.
